Excellent article despite the fact that in the context of today the history contained therein gives me the feeling of hopelessness.

Washington DC and what over two generations would morph into 'the deep state' managed to sustain itself, aggrandize itself, during Cold War I on the narrative that the US was "one nation under God" and that the antagonist was "godless communism", as instantiated in the USSR. Of course it was always more complicated than that but whenever doubts or cracks in our resolve would develop, that narrative in one form or another would be marshalled to hold things together and grow the habit of antagonism. Until the Soviet Union was no more and the antagonism should have been laid to rest. "Godless communism", such as it ever was, was no longer in the saddle.

Seems like it must have been just an excuse because Washington, and especially the so called EU, and most especially the Brits, just couldn't break the habit.

Thank you for sharing this interesting and informative piece.

I think btw Lukacs meant to refer to the Romanian ‘Iron Guard’ rather than the ‘Iron Cross’.
