Kagan’s entire worldview hinges on the illusion that American power is both infinite and unchallengeable. It’s an illusion that has collapsed in real time from Kabul to Kharkiv.

The uncomfortable truth is that Russia’s position in Ukraine reflects a hard geopolitical reality, one that no volume of think tank wishcasting or magazine hand-wringing can erase. Pretending otherwise only prolongs the war, raises the stakes, and deepens the human cost.

What Kagan derides as “appeasement” is, in fact, the sober recognition that you don’t dictate terms in a theater where you hold no decisive leverage.

"[Trump] is asking the Ukrainian leader to give away huge swaths of his country to a conquering army for nothing."

Leader? Shouldn't the President of all Ukraine be the one? Oh, wait.
