Back when I was living in DC I became aware of something quite funny:

Bellingcat does everything possible to be taken extremely seriously by the Beltway establishment...and yet in so many institutions it is not. "we already know what the CIA thinks" is a common refrain. Many dismiss it as a serious actor, seeing it more as an over-eager gadfly and teacher's pet.

I personally know someone high up in an establishment think tank (I wont say which one) who found a joint program between their institution and Bellingcat was going on, critically examined it, found the work incredibly amateurish and banned their subordinates from ever working with Bellingcat again.
